Default ‘Call Me Ehsaan’

By Micah Garen
Call Me Ehsaan: A look at the war in Afghanistan through the eyes of Lt. Col. John Darin Loftis, one of the U.S. Air Force’s prized experts in Afghan language and culture, who was killed in Kabul on Feb. 25, 2012.

‘Call Me Ehsaan’

By MICAH GAREN

Quote:
“Call Me Ehsaan” is a look at the United States war in Afghanistan through the eyes of Lt. Col. John Darin Loftis, who was killed in February while working at the Ministry of Interior in Kabul. I met Colonel Loftis when he was a public information officer attached to the provincial reconstruction team in Zabul Province in 2010. He told me he was one of only three Pashto speakers in the United States Air Force. He was deeply interested in the Afghan people and their culture, learning the poetry of Rahman Baba and reciting it at a poetry reading in Zabul. His Afghan name was Ehsaan, a name he picked out of a hat, which has been translated variously as “to owe someone a favor” or “beholden under obligation.”
Colonel Loftis wrote in a letter to his two young daughters before his first deployment to Afghanistan: “My reasons for going to Afghanistan include an honorable sense of duty to help others. If I had stayed home and not volunteered to go, I would have always wondered what I could have contributed.”
It is unclear whether Colonel Loftis was directly targeted when he was shot in the Ministry of Interior, where he was stationed as a chief plans officer working with the Afghan National Police. The alleged killer, an Afghan intelligence specialist working for the Afghan police, also shot and killed a second United States soldier, Army Maj. Robert Marchanti II, according to the United States Air Force. No motive has been identified for the murders, although the Taliban claimed they were in retaliation for the recent burning of Korans by United States soldiers. An investigation is continuing.
