Default Tanks to have missile defense by 2007

The Jerusalem Post Internet Edition

Tanks to have missile defense by 2007
Yaakov Katz, THE JERUSALEM POST Nov. 30, 2006

The IDF plans to purchase and install Trophy active protection anti-missile systems on its Merkava tanks by the end of 2007, a high-ranking military officer said Wednesday.

The decision to purchase the systems was made following the war in Lebanon, during which the Armored Crops sustained heavy losses from Hizbullah anti-tank missile squads which damaged 40 Merkava tanks and killed over 30 tank crew members.

Developed by the Rafael Armament Development Authority, the Trophy system creates a hemispheric protected zone around armored vehicles such as the Merkava tank, which operated prominently in Lebanon during the month-long war this past summer. The system is designed to detect and track a threat and counter it with a launched projectile that intercepts the anti-tank missile.

The IDF has asked the Treasury for a budget boost following the war in Lebanon amounting to NIS 10 billion. Part of the money, the high-ranking officer said, would be allocated to install active protection systems like the Trophy on IDF tanks.

While the Ground Forces Command led by Maj.-Gen. Benny Gantz has decided to procure the Trophy system, it has also asked other Israeli industries, including Israel Military Industries (IMI), to continue with its development of its own original tank missile defense system, called The Iron Fist.

Claimed to be capable of neutralizing all anti-tank threats, including kinetic shells fired by enemy tanks, the Iron Fist is in its final stages of testing according to IMI CEO Avi Felder and would be operational and ready for mass production by the end of 2007, only a few months behind Rafael's Trophy.

The Iron Fist consists of a radar and passive optical system that detect incoming threats and destroy them by using a combustible blast interceptor within a fraction of a second. Unlike the Trophy which fires off a large number of projectiles, the Iron Fist intercepts incoming threats by using a rocket the shape of a mortar that destroys the threat by using a blast effect which crushes its soft components or deflects the missile or kinetic rod in their flight.

The Trophy and Iron fist systems are good solutions but it's really only part of the equation, you cannot relay solely on technology, part of the problem in the recent mini war in Lebanon was simply inadequate training of the crews which were simply too accusomed to the low intensity conflicts (LIC) of the Gaza strip and west bank and the army really needs to kick out the habbit of using tankers as infantry.

another issue was simply incorrect use of tanks inside Lebanon, the advantage of tanks is manuverability combined with heavy fire power and in this conflict, very often they were used simply as static covering positions for the infantry or sent into combat while terriran is being ignored like in the Ayon valley battle.

I heard evidence of tanks getting targeted by 6,7 ATGM at once, could the Trophy or Iron fist stop all of them?
alot of people have a sort of misconception that we just got to wait untill the new systems will be introduced and than we'll be in almost invulnerable and thats just not the case, i'm sure this system will save life but as i've said it's only one part of a greater equation.

crews need to be educated on the new AT threats and high ranking officers on correct tactics and doctrines of dealing with it.
and alot more time needs to be devoted to training regardless of the day to day operational duties.
the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit and the death of 2 crew members could have probably been prevented if the crew would have followed the drill of incidents just like it.

I saw on NBC, that the US Army was trying to get their armored forces in Iraq equiped whit the Israeli Trophy system.
Unfortenately, some people in the Pentagon didn´t liked the idea, and puted various excuses, like:
1. That the Tropy only work in one direction, but it really work on 360 degrees protection.
2. They said that it doesn´t have an autoload system after the first attacks. But it really do have a very effective autoload system.
3. They claim that the US is developing a more efficient system than the Trophy, but it will not be ready until 2012. (What about the soldier`s safety meanwhile?).
4. The Price, well, I can´t give opinion about it since I don`t know how much expensive the Trophy is. (BUT US CAN AFFORD IT, we all know that).

What do you know about that Trophy in the US Army?

I must second that, the main goal of the Trophy is to save soldiersīs lives, and any effort for that must be made. I hope the US military authorities understand that.
