Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan gave a swift telephone call to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki yesterday to prevent the execution of three Iraqi women.

Erdoğan spoke to Maliki about the abnormal conditions in Iraq because of the invasion and he expressed his suspicion. Under these circumstances, they were not judged fairly, said Erdoğan to Maliki according to Prime Ministry sources. The prime minister also mentioned his opposition to the death penalty and drew attention to reactions from the international community, saying that the concerns are shared by Turkish citizens as well. Maliki, in response to Erdoğan, gave a promise to re-examine the files of the three women and to deal with the subject, according to the same sources.

Wassan Talib, age 31, Zainab Fadhil, age 25, and Liqa Omar Muhammad, age 26, were accused of participating in the resistance against the U.S. occupation of Iraq and sentenced to death by the Supreme Iraqi Criminal Court, today.
