Well, the tension between the Hamas and Fatah has defenitily reached a new level but the question is wheter their struggle for power will overcome their hate towards the "Greater evil", Israel.
Khalad Mashal, the leader of the Hamas that is living in Damescus has said today that they must stop the inner struggle and fight Israel, i'm not so sure he will be able to stop what might be brewing.
a palestinian civil war is not necessarily in Israel's best intrest either, sure having them fight each other and leave us alone for a while might sound tempting but it might end up having some nasty results that may change from diffrent prepectives of diffrent people that have diffrent agendas.
if a civil war will indeed break out and reach the proportions of the lebanese civil war there is no doubt that in such a high profile place there will be a huge pressure for international intervention and having a force similar to UNIFIL in the territories will hurt the IDF's ability to operate there.
there is also no guarantee that the Fatah will win(not that they are much better, they at least know what the west wants to hear), Hamas seemes stronger to me and any support to the Fatah by Israel will only make it seem less popular in the palestinian street.
i'm not so sure that if elections were to be held today, the Hamas would not win again.
in the end some sort of a solution will have to be reached with the palestinians and it hurts Israel politically, economically and militarilly to keep this conflict unresolved and having a civil war will only prolonge the current situation.
