Default Knocked Out: Indian boxing federation suspended for 'rigged elections'

In another major embarrassment to the India, the International Amateur Boxing Association suspended Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) on Thursday.

This development came after two days when IOC had on Tuesday suspended the IOA because of government interference in its selection process.

The decision was largely expected after the IOA decided to go ahead with the elections today under the government's Sports Code, defying the IOC's diktat to hold the polls under the Olympic Charter.

The possible manipulation of the recent IABF elections held in September this year is cited as one of the reasons behind IABF's ouster from the World body association.

The IABF elected BJP MLA Abhishek Singh Matoria as president and Abhay Singh Chautala as chairman in the elections held this year in September. The IABF created the post of chairman to accommodate Chautala in the Association.

After slapping a provisional suspension to the India's boxing body, in its statement, the AIBA said, “Further to the International Olympic Committee’s suspension imposed on the Indian Olympic Association, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Executive Committee Bureau has decided today, 6 December 2012, to provisionally suspend the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF). This provisional suspension is also due to the fact that AIBA had learned about possible manipulation of the recent IABF’s election. AIBA will now investigate this election and especially a potential political link between IOA President, as former Chairman of the IABF, and the IABF election.”

The decision to ban AIBF was taken in a meeting at Lausanne, Switzerland on Thursday.
